Authorities say a Marion man went to great heights to hide his marijuana garden, but it backfired when they spotted it on the roof of his house from a helicopter.
Investigators have charged 52-year-old Jack E. Silver of Samaritan Drive with manufacturing marijuana and maintaining a place to keep a controlled substance.
Officers with the McDowell County Sheriff's Office, the Marion Police Department, the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Forest Service, the N.C. National Guard Counter Drug Task Force and the N.C. Highway Patrol seized 76 plants that were growing on the roof of Silver's residence off Buck Creek Road, according to Lt. Shanon Smith of the Sheriff's Office.
The crop was located on Aug. 26 during a pot eradication effort. A N.C. National Guard helicopter crew spotted the plants during the eradication and directed officers on the ground to the site, Smith stated.
The lieutenant added that the suspect was seen tossing some of the marijuana off the roof before ground units arrived at the house.
The plants ranged in height from 3 to 4 feet and had an estimated street value of $70,000.
