The combination of stagnation and apathy are not easily overcome; in fact, when you put them together, they are so detrimental to our wellness that we would give anything for a breath of fresh air.
In order to bring that about, we realize that only change can take the staleness away, and usher in that new day, when you can feel a renewal of the spirit.
Our last national election was all about a fresh start. I believe that the citizens of Marion are hungry for a new start and want to chart a new course. Change is a process, so how do we start the process of change in our city?
Well, I think we are off to a good start. I now see incumbents that are being challenged for a change, and not simply running unopposed.
I hear people talking more about the disintegration of the "good ole boy" system of revolving door politics, whereby incumbents basically homestead their offices in some instances up to 40 years and longer.
I don't believe in the old bait and switch where politicians just trade places. It reminds me of an old phrase about lipstick on a pig.
I was born in Marion, and it does my heart good to see new faces in politics, and hear people talking about change, and the genuine excitement about the endless possibilities for our city.
There seems to be a shift in the way people think now, moving away from the cynical past where all I heard was "no need to vote, they're just going to put the same old people back in there" into a time now, where people feel more free, talk more openly, speak their mind and actually want to get involved.
Can you imagine that?
Diversity, fresh faces, new ideas, a new direction, and they want to be a part of a new future for our city.
I'm hopeful and optimistic that one day our city will be alive, vibrant, and a hub of activity, industry, business, with more jobs and hope for our young people. I truly hope that at some point Marion lives up to its name and becomes an attractive gateway for all who enter in and those that may just want to stay.
