McDowell’s unemployment rate showed little change in October.

According to figures released this week from the N.C. Employment Security Commission, McDowell’s unemployment rate was 10.9 percent, up slightly from 10.8 percent in September.

The state listed 2,188 people unemployed out of a workforce of 20,003. In September, 2,184 workers were listed as unemployed out of a labor force of 20,240.

Rates for nearby counties were as follows: Avery, 8.2; Buncombe, 7.4; Burke, 12; Catawba, 11.4; Mitchell, 9.3; Rutherford, 13.2; and Yancey, 9.7.

Unemployment rates dropped in 66 of North Carolina’s 100 counties in October. The rates increased in 18 counties and remained the same in 16. Over the year, the unemployment rates dropped in 90 counties, remained the same in four counties, and increased in six.

“Over the year, we have seen unemployment rates decline in 90 counties, however, one-third of the counties had rates greater than 10 percent in October,” said ESC Chairman Lynn R. Holmes. “We continue to face economic challenges with respect to job growth, but we at ESC continue to assist those looking for work and those who qualify for unemployment benefits.”

Between November 2009 and October 2010, McDowell residents received $29.9 million in benefits.

North Carolina had 45 counties that were at or below the state’s unadjusted unemployment rate of 9.1 percent.

Rates decreased in 13 of the state’s Metropolitan Statistical Areas and remained the same in one.

The number of workers employed (not-seasonally adjusted) decreased in October by 3,528, to 4,065,552. The number of people unemployed decreased, by 8,598. The number of unemployed people in October was 408,852 workers, compared with 417,450 in September.

Currituck County had the state’s lowest unemployment rate in October, at 4.9 percent. Meanwhile, Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate, at 14.7 percent.
