McDowell's freshmen have a chance to get a taste of high school. McDowell High School will have its High School 101 open house Tuesday evening.
Guidance Counselor Kendall Waugh said the purpose of the event is to get the ninth-graders used to the idea that they are part of the high school.
"I think a lot of them don't realize that the work they are doing right now applies to college," she said. "They're a part of the high school even though they're not here with us."
There's a lot a kid has to know about high school -- a different world from junior high school. The open house offers tours and break-out sessions designed to familiarize the kids and answer their parents' questions at the same time. To sweeten the deal, the school will feed its guests at 5:30 p.m.
Socializing and eating will give way to business, with introductory comments at 6 p.m. and sessions starting at 6:15.
Departmental information booths will feature the yearbook staff with Andy Ferguson, Exceptional Children's Services with Teri Queen and transportation with Lee Hall. The theater and dance department's booth will be operated by Jennifer Dover, computer programming by Daniel Smith and Rick Lindsey and Mariette van der Sluijs will introduce the English as a Second Language department.
The times are 6:15, 6:45 and 7:15 p.m. and there will be eight sessions to choose from, including the following:
-- North Carolina Virtual High School, covering Huskins Bill college credit courses and dual concurrent programs at McDowell Tech
-- College Acceptance with tips on preparing and applying for college
-- Money for College, offering guidance on scholarships and grants available
-- Math in High School, explaining the state's requirements for graduation and available classes and resources
-- Graduating Future Ready, explaining the latest round of new state-mandated course of study
-- McDowell Articulation Program (MAP), an overview of enrichment, resources and services for gifted students
-- MHS After Hours, focusing on the extracurricular activities and programs
Tours include the career and technical education (CTE) department's auto service, collision repair, welding and metal work; construction, including masonry, cabinetry, electrical trades and construction and carpentry; health occupations, graphics, cosmetology, teacher cadets and marketing; and business education, child care, culinary arts, apparel design and drafting.
The doors will open to freshmen and their folks at 5:30 p.m. and the last sessions end at 7:45 p.m. Booths will remain open until 8 p.m. For more information about High School 101, call the school at 652-7920.
