Candidate filing period begins Monday

The filing period for the 2010 elections starts Monday and already people are getting ready for this year's political campaigns.
This year, voters in McDowell will be asked to select their candidates for the N.C. House of Representatives, the district attorney, clerk of Superior Court, sheriff, county commissioners and the School Board. The U.S. House of Representatives' 11th Congressional District seat and the U.S. Senate are also up for election.
The filing period for candidates starts at noon Monday and will last until noon on Friday, Feb. 26. People can file as candidates at the McDowell County Board of Elections office, located on the second floor of the County Administration Building, 60 E. Court St. They have to pay a filing fee, which is based on a percentage of the salary for the particular office.
Three seats on the McDowell County Board of Commissioners are up for election this year. Democrat Dean Buff and Republicans Michael Lavender and David Walker hold these seats. The term of office is four years and the filing fee is $98.34.
Four seats on the McDowell County Board of Education are also up for election. It is a non-partisan race and the term of office is four years. The seats are held by Lynn Greene, Dewey Rayburn, Wayne Miller and Priscilla Owenby. The filing fee is $5.
The office of sheriff for McDowell County is also up for grabs. Republican Dudley Greene is the incumbent and it is a four-year term. The filing fee is $539.94.
The office of clerk of Superior Court is up for election too. Democrat Don Ramsey holds this office and it is a four-year term. The filing fee is $824.01.
The district attorney's office will also be contested this year. It is for Judicial District 29A, which covers McDowell and Rutherford counties. Democrat Brad Greenway holds this office, which has a four-year term. The filing fee is $1,193.
The N.C. House's 85th District seat is up for grabs in 2010. Republican Mitch Gillespie is the incumbent and the office has a two-year term. The filing fee is $207.
The N.C. Senate's 47th District seat will be up for election as well. Democrat Joe Sam Queen is the incumbent and the office has a two-year term. The filing fee is $207.
In the U.S. House of Representatives, the 11th Congressional District seat will be contested this year. Democrat Heath Shuler holds this office and it has a two-year term. The filing fee is $1,740.
And North Carolina voters will select who they want in the U.S. Senate. Republican Richard Burr is up for re-election this year. The term is for six years and the filing fee for candidates is $1,740.
In 2010, two seats on the McDowell County Soil and Water Conservation District will be up for election. Neil Brackett and Beverly Lonon Foster hold these seats. But the filing period for the Soil and Water election won't start until the summer. It begins June 14 and ends July 2.
