Still more winter weather is expected to hit McDowell County and the rest of western North Carolina this weekend. This time, the storm could bring ice and snow on top of what fell last weekend.
The National Weather Service issued Thursday a winter storm warning for the western counties and Piedmont of North Carolina. Snow was predicted to start falling before 4 a.m. today, then it is predicted to become snow and sleet. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent and new snow and sleet accumulations could be from 1 to 3 inches.
The sleet is expected to continue today until around 1 p.m. It will then turn into rain and again the chance of precipitation is 100 percent. Less than half of inch of sleet could fall this afternoon, according to the weather service.
Tonight, the rain will continue before 1 a.m., then a chance of sleet between 1 and 4 a.m. A chance of snow and sleet is predicted after 4 a.m.
On Saturday, the National Weather Service is calling for a chance of snow before 10 a.m. then a chance of rain between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. A chance of snow may happen after 4 p.m. Saturday.
The forecast for Sunday is partly sunny with a high near 43, according to the Web site for the National Weather Service.
