The family of Howard and Freida Parker of Old Fort lost virtually everything recently when their home was consumed by fire. Now some kids from Old Fort Elementary are working to help that family.
The Arrowhead Children's Theater will present a stage performance tonight to raise money to help the Parkers with expenses.
As reported in Friday's McDowell News, Christina Parker and her three children escaped their burning home early last Thursday morning.
The damage was extensive, according to a press release from Old Fort Volunteer Fire Chief Ron Richardson.
"The occupant stated that smoke detectors alerted her just after she put her youngest child in bed," said the release. "She saw a fire near a corner of the living room and then got her three children out of the house."
Old Fort Elementary Principal Charles Gaffigan asked the McDowell County School Board to show their support Thursday night by attending the Arrowhead Theater's performance of "A Fairy Tale Courtroom" by Dana Proulx.
Two of the Parkers' children are students at his school, he said.
"They are currently living in a church parsonage," he stated. "One of the cast members (from the Arrowhead troupe) is a member of the family."
A recent performance of the play was a great success, he said, and had the crowd in stitches.
"The director asked that we do another performance and dedicate it entirely to the benefit of the Parker family," said Gaffigan.
No admission will be charged, he said, but it is suggested that a $5 donation be made.
The performance will take place Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. For more information, call 668-7646.
