A single-vehicle crash left hundreds without power late Thursday night in Marion. It also led to DWI charges against the driver.
At about 8:15 p.m. Thursday, Michael Conley Boggs, 28, of U.S. 221 South in Marion was driving south on Main Street in his 1995 Ford. When he approached the sharp curve at the intersection with Morgan Street and the beginning of Rutherford Road, Boggs left the road, according to a report filed by Officer B.C. Loftis of the Marion Police Department.
Boggs "Failed to slow for the curve and ran straight off the side of the roadway, striking a utility pole and going off the embankment," striking a Duke Power utility pole and transformer, the report stated.
The impact with the utility pole interrupted power to a wide area in Marion. A Police Department employee said power was lost at the department headquarters and some time passed before the generator came online.
Power outages were experienced as far away as Glenview Street and Veterans Drive following the crash. Computer communication for the school system was interrupted for several hours the next day, although it was not known for certain at press time Sunday if the interruption was related to the power outage.
Matt Dymond, an associate of The McDowell News who was on the scene, said that Duke Power workers were busy for several hours repairing the damage.
Damage to Boggs's Ford were estimated at $5,000, according to the police report. Loftis charged Boggs with DWI, careless and reckless driving and injury to real property. Loftis estimated that Boggs was travelling about 50 mph when he left the road. The posted speed limit is 20 mph.
