Tom Johnson Camping Center collecting items for the troops

Tom Johnson Camping Center is showing its support of the armed forces by teaming up with Buncombe County and Clear Channel Asheville for Christmas in July, a donation drive collecting items for troops stationed overseas.

Those interested in participating can drop off items through July 31 at Tom Johnson Camping Center, 1885 U.S. 70 West in Marion. Complete lists of suggested items, specific requests and all drop-off locations are available online at www.buncombecounty.org/projects/christmasInJuly.asp. You can also get more information at www.tomjohnsoncamping.com.

In addition to the donation drive, Tom Johnson Camping Center has two special offers during the month of July for military personnel. Anyone who presents a valid military ID at Tom Johnson Camping Center before the end of the month will receive $200 worth of free parts/accessories with the purchase of a RV. In addition, current owners who possess a valid military ID can receive 10 percent discount on parts and accessories purchased or service booked during the month of July.

“We are big supporters of the United States Armed Forces,” says Gary Stroud, vice president of Tom Johnson Camping Center. “Participating in the Christmas in July campaign with Buncombe County is a real treat for everyone here. Hopefully the items collected will make time spent overseas a little bit brighter for those brave men and women.”

Some of the suggested items include cards and letters of support, coffee, protein bars, batteries, beef sticks, jerky, hot chocolate packets, canned fruit, canned soups, Easy Mac & Cheese, prepackaged cookies, instant oatmeal, Kool Aid, microwave popcorn, small boxes of crackers, Tylenol.

Some of the special wants include small desk fans, hand and foot warmers, hot plates, small coffee grinders, sheet and pillow case sets, cool scarves, jogging pants, wash cloths, bath towels, men’s deodorant, shaving cream, small-size shampoos, mouthwash, sunblock, mosquito repellent, new and used DVDs and CDs, pads of paper, handheld games, card games, puzzle books, Duct tape, air fresheners and others.

For the holiday season, folks can donate candy, Christmas ornaments, small 18- to 22-inch Christmas trees, blankets and small unwrapped gifts.
