For the month of June, McDowell County reported a jobless rate of 12.2 percent, which is almost unchanged from the previous month.

The N.C. Employment Security Commission recently released the jobless figures for June for all 100 counties in the state. Unemployment rates decreased in 35 of North Carolina’s 100 counties in June while 45 experienced higher rates. The remaining 20 counties had the same rate as in May, according to statistics released recently by the state ESC.

McDowell’s unemployment rate dropped very slightly from the 12.4 percent rate in May to 12.2 percent in June. The county’s rate for April is 2.1 points higher than the statewide rate of 10.1 percent.

McDowell still ranks among the counties with high unemployment rates. The county’s rate for June means 2,481 McDowell workers are listed as unemployed, out of a labor force of 20,287.

“The June county data show that for many of the counties in the state, the unemployment rate has showed some level of improvement,” said ESC Chairman Lynn R. Holmes. “Unfortunately, there are still many counties where the rate of unemployment remains high. As always, our agency will respond to our customers who seek assistance in employment services and unemployment benefits. We also continue to serve North Carolina businesses that use our resources to recruit workers.”

In June, North Carolina had 47 counties that were at or below the state’s unadjusted unemployment rate of 10.1 percent. Rates decreased in nine of the state’s Metropolitan Statistical Areas, decreased in one and remained the same in four.

Of the surrounding counties, Rutherford reported the highest rate for June with a 14.7 percent rate. Rutherford also had the third highest rate in the state for that month. Burke had a 12.8 percent rate. Mitchell reported a 10.4 percent rate while Yancey reported a 10.6 percent rate. Buncombe reported an 8.2 percent rate. Avery reported a rate of 8 percent, the lowest rate of the surrounding counties.

Currituck County had the state’s lowest unemployment rate in June, at 4.8 percent. Meanwhile, Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate, at 16.3 percent.

The not-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates show employment and unemployment conditions at the time the data was collected. The rates are not adjusted to remove seasonal fluctuations and generally are not used in determining the significance of economic trends.
