Pregnancy Care Center relocates

»  Comments | Post a Comment

McDowell Pregnancy Care Center's future looks much brighter for 2010.
Back in September, The McDowell News wrote an article on the organization's dire need for funding and donations, as they were near the point of closing down. Due to an outpouring of support from the community, McDowell Pregnancy Care has since been able to meet all their goals including the addition of a billboard advertisement (located on the five-lane), and relocation to a new facility. The center is now located at 2170 Rutherford road (just past Countryside Bar-B-Que).
"We have double the room we did before in this new building," said Elizabeth Poteat, center director. "There is an additional counseling room and onsite storage for donations. We still have a lot of unpacking and a little fixing up to do, but we are very excited to be here. This is a definite blessing."
Poteat also said they can now accommodate more volunteers, which are currently needed.
Since McDowell Pregnancy Care is a nonprofit organization, there is always a need for donations. And with the new move, comes higher rent.
"Money is always helpful, and right now we are in need of diapers, especially sizes 3, 4 and 5. We run out of these sizes each week, and wipes too. Any baby-related items we can also use and that includes new and gently-used clothing."
Fundraisers are held throughout the year, and Poteat says they would like to have a few yard and bake sales this summer at the new location, as there is a shared parking lot beside them.
"I think the best thing about our move is the great location," said John McKinney, the center's chairman of the board. "Before, no one really knew who we were or where we were. Even though we had taken out ads and did radio announcements, we just weren't getting a good response. Now we are in a prime spot and I believe this will help tremendously."
McKinney stated that board members are needed for McDowell Pregnancy Care. There are currently five serving, and most have gone full-term.
"This is one of our new goals. A few other goals we have are to find ways to get more churches involved, and eventually, we would like to add an ultrasound machine to the facility."
The center continues to serve as an outreach for expectant moms and offers free pregnancy testing; referrals to doctors or other professionals for OB-Gyn care; follow-up throughout and after pregnancy; information concerning and alternatives to abortion; post-abortion support, education, Bible study and more. Needed baby items are available on a "Learn to Earn" basis, which allows moms to earn points through attending classes, counseling, prenatal visits and more.
Hours remain Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
