The man was taken to a waiting ambulance on Hankins Road.
A man escaped the wrath of an oncoming train Monday as he stood on the railroad trestle overlooking Yancey Road.
Around 1:45 p.m., emergency dispatchers received a call from a CSX employee, stating that a man was threatening to harm himself, according to EMS Director William Kehler.
The caller informed emergency officials that, as he started across the trestle, he spotted a man standing there. The engineer was able to get the train stopped.
The man, whom authorities said was highly intoxicated, identified himself as Steven Cordell, but further information about him was unknown at deadline.
Kehler said EMS paramedics and law enforcement officers climbed the trestle and secured the man. He was transported to the tracks on Hankins Road, loaded onto a waiting ambulance and taken to The McDowell Hospital for evaluation.
On the scene Monday were members of the EMS, the McDowell County Rescue Squad and the McDowell County Sheriff's Office.
