Three people, including two firefighters returning home from this weekend's Fire & Rescue College, were killed in two separate wrecks on McDowell roads this weekend, troopers say.
At approximately 3 p.m. Sunday, in a heavy downpour, a black Mustang traveling north on U.S. 221 at the U.S. Forest Service work center in Woodlawn hydroplaned and slid sideways into the southbound lane, according to First Sgt. Stuart Mitchell of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
The Mustang smashed into a Chrysler, causing the Mustang to break long-ways into two pieces.
Mitchell said the two occupants of the Mustang, who were killed, were members of Blowing Rock Fire Department.
The two occupants of the Chrysler were taken by ambulance to Memorial Mission Hospital.
Further information, including the identities of the wreck victims, was unavailable at deadline.

In a separate incident, a Buncombe County man was killed after losing control of and wrecking his new motorcycle on Interstate 40 Saturday night.
Bruce Charles Templeton, 53, of Asheville died at the scene of the crash at mile marker 78.
At 9:55 p.m., Templeton was driving his 2009 Kawaski west, when he ran off the left side of the pavement and hit the guardrail, according to a report by Trooper R.W. Monosso of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Sgt. Kevin Owens said Templeton just bought the motorcycle Friday in Raleigh and was on his way back home when the wreck occurred.
Monosso listed speed as a contributing factor to the fatal crash, but preliminary reports did not estimate how fast the motorcycle was traveling.
