A Marion teen remains hospitalized after being struck by a truck on his way to school Tuesday morning.
Tyler Corpening, 14, of Perry Street was flown by MedCenter Air to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville. He was listed as a patient in the pediatric intensive care unit Tuesday afternoon, but a condition report was not available.
Authorities said he suffered two broken legs and a head injury. Attempts at reaching Corpening’s family Tuesday were unsuccessful.
At 7:31 a.m., the teen was crossing Baldwin Avenue headed toward the back entrance of East McDowell Junior High School. He darted in front of a 2003 Ford pickup truck driven by Gary Michael Childers, 64, of Sherwood Forest Drive in Nebo, according to Sgt. M.S. Hensley of the Marion Police Department.
“Multiple witnesses told me that (Childers) couldn’t have avoided him,” Hensley stated. “He didn’t use the crosswalk. He just walked right out in front of the truck.”
No charges were filed.
The sergeant added that Corpening takes classes at McDowell High and was possibly headed to East to catch the bus.
