U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler visited McDowell County Wednesday and met with representatives of various industries in Marion and Old Fort.
While in Marion, Shuler, a Democrat who represents the 11th Congressional District in the U.S. House, talked with a group of human resource directors from local businesses. He then traveled to Old Fort and met with Mayor Garland Norton.
Shuler, Norton, Police Chief Melvin Lytle and two of Shuler’s staff members toured the Ethan Allen plant.
Last month, the furniture manufacturer announced plans to create 90 jobs and invest $250,000 to expand its production capacity at the Old Fort plant. The project to expand case goods operations was made possible in part by a $270,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.
Julie Fishman, a spokeswoman for Shuler, said the congressman planned to meet with the plant’s employees and see its operations.
Shuler also met with plant managers and Old Fort officials. However, a plant manager from Ethan Allen asked a McDowell News reporter to leave before the meeting got underway.
