Moms got a chance to dine and mingle with other mothers during a recent event at West Marion Elementary.

The school held its fourth annual Moms and Muffins breakfast, an event where moms can come, socialize with other moms, and get a few helpful tips before the holiday season.

Guidance counselor Wendy Gaffigan helped set up the event to help moms de-stress and enjoy a little kid free time.

“We invited all the moms here today to teach them how to get through the holidays in a less stressful way and give them tips for cooking and saving time,” said Gaffigan.

As a special treat Gaffigan arranged for Bruce Brown from Bruce’s Fabulous Foods to come and give a cooking demonstration.

For his presentation, Brown found some creative ways to help moms recreate their children’s lunch boxes.

“When they first invited me I decided that it would be nice to give them something that they can use for their kids,” said Brown. “So I’m going to teach them how to make quesadillas that they can make and refrigerate over night to put in their kids’ lunch boxes.”

Moms attending said it was a nice break from their daily routines.

“It’s really nice to come and talk to other moms,” said Christy Bright. “I went to school here and I love this school. They really make you feel like your part of a family.”

Beth Laney and her children enjoyed the event.

“We don’t get a lot of opportunities to get out because I’m a stay at home mom, so it’s wonderful to see the other moms,” Laney said.

For weeks, children at West Marion have been anticipating the visit. Many made sure their moms got their RSVPs in on time.

“I’ve had kids checking with me all week to make sure that I got their parents RSVP slip,” said Gaffigan.

As the event came to an end the moms were treated with a special medley of holiday songs sung my Jennifer Pittman’s kindergarten class.

Gaffigan said the mom event benefited the students and staffers, as well.

“It’s good for the kids to see their parents in school,” she said. “It shows them that their moms support them and the school. It’s good for the moms because it gives them a break. It’s fun for us because we like doing it.”
