The Cub House at West Marion Elementary was recently transformed into Santa’s workshop.
Kindergartners through sixth-graders got some gift-giving advice from some very special elves from McDowell Early College.
“Every kid has had a chance to shop today,” said guidance counselor Wendy Gaffigan. “We’ve had help from elves from Early College and they’ve helped the kids shop and wrap gifts.”
The event allowed students to buy a few items for their loved ones.
“Does your mom like chocolate?” asked Early College volunteer Landon Watkins to one of the students he was helping.
“No, but Dad does,” said Georgia Crawley before examining the small box of chocolates and placing them back on the table. “Maybe I’ll look for something else.”
Crawley was one of the 550 or so students who made their way through West Marion’s Santa shop.
Donations for the shop started coming in from a local business back in August.
“A lot of these items came from Foothills Supply,” said Gaffigan. “They donated a lot of the toys here.”
Through the whole experience, helpers from Early College assisted those on the hunt for the perfect gift.
“Do you think your brother will like that?” asked Taylor Kanipe.
“Well, we live on a farm so I think he will,” said Hayden Rayfield.
And students got help wrapping their gifts.
“It was the cutest thing, one little boy came up to me and ask ‘Do you have gift wrapping?’” said Gaffigan. “When I pointed him to the wrapping station he was so excited.”
By the end of the day the gifts had dwindled and students had their presents ready to take home.
“I know my mom will like this,” said Thomas Conner before placing the item in his bag.
