One of the men police say was a member of a “traveling band of thieves” was sentenced to time behind bars for crimes he committed in McDowell.
Shannon Storm, 38, of Rocky Point recently pleaded guilty in McDowell County Superior Court to obtaining property by false pretense and conspiracy to obtain property by false pretense.
Judge James W. Morgan sentenced him to seven to nine months in prison and gave him credit for time spent in pretrial confinement.
Early last year, Storm and other suspects stole checks out of mailboxes in various cities across the state, according to Detective Angie Fineberg of the Marion Police Department.
Fineberg stated that the culprits swiped victims’ account numbers and license numbers and made phony checks using that information, plus they manufactured bogus licenses with their own photos on them.
Some of the fabricated checks were passed at Marion’s Walmart in March 2011. The suspects were caught on tape at the store.
