Gary MacLaren is making another attempt at the Register of Deeds office. And a former District Court judge is seeking election to a higher court.

The 54-year-old MacLaren filed Tuesday as a Republican candidate for the office. The McDowell News was unable to reach MacLaren for comment on Tuesday, but he later submitted a prepared statement.

MacLaren made his first attempt in 2008 at getting elected to the Register of Deeds office.

“I will offer fresh leadership to this office and will work to improve its relationship with the public,” he said in his statement. “I had tremendous support in the last election and I believe those folks will be behind me in this campaign. I have a strong work ethic and I believe the citizens of McDowell County deserve someone dedicated to serving them.”

A resident of 6212 U.S. 221 South in Glenwood, MacLaren is a 1976 graduate of McDowell High School. He studied chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a laboratory technician with Environmental Inks.  He also served as deputy Clerk of Superior Court under Don Ramsey. He’s also been a firefighter/first responder and a Boy Scout leader.

Also Tuesday, Deborah M. Burgin filed as a candidate for the Superior Court judge’s seat for Judicial District 29A, which consists of Rutherford and McDowell. Burgin, 57, is a former District Court judge and a Rutherfordton attorney. She is running for the judgeship now held by Judge Laura “Suzy” Bridges of Rutherford County, who is retiring.

Burgin announced her candidacy in January but made it official this week.

As of deadline, no one had filed to run for office on Wednesday at the McDowell Board of Elections.
