Jane McGee has done her deeds, and she’s done her time.

McGee, a 62-year-old Democrat, is the current Registrar of Deeds in McDowell County, having been elected to the office four years ago. Before that, she served 15 years as a deputy and as an assistant in the Register of Deeds office.

She announced this week, as filing began for local offices, that she would not seek re-election this year.

“I’m ready to turn it over to someone else and enjoy life a little bit,” she said in a prepared statement. “My husband is already retired, and we have some things we want to do and some traveling we want to do while we are both in good health. I also have a precious 2-year-old granddaughter, Baylee, I want to spend time with before she has to start to school.”

McGee’s last working day will be Nov. 30. With her announcement has come a flurry of activity surrounding the position. Three candidates filed for the job in two days this week.

“We have a good office here, and I hope the voters remember that experience goes a long way in this office,” McGee stated. “Somebody off the street can’t just walk in and do this job.”

And it’s a job of which she knows all the ins and outs. She’s seen many changes over the past 23 years.

McGee said employees have gone from typing the indexes on typewriters when she first started the job to today’s digital imaging on computers. All of the index books from 1842 to the present, as well as deed books from No. 1 to the present, are computerized. The office is in the process of moving to e-recording, as well as a statewide birth records system.

“These have been great years, and we have made great strides in this office,” McGee stated. “The public has allowed me to serve them for 23 years. It’s been an honor that they put their trust and faith in me.”
