Kick off this weekend with a splash – of paint!
On Friday, MACA will hold an open reception for locals to participate in its “Community HeArt” project.
Artists of all ages and abilities are encouraged to drop in between 3 and 5 p.m. to add their personal touch to the gallery’s public mural, a 6-yard swath of canvas.
“Our goal is to see how many people can paint on this at once,” said Susan Pyatt-Baker, MACA director. “If we run out of room, we’ll tack up more.”
The canvas has been sectioned off into 144, 9-inch blocks. Each participant will receive one block of space, paint and brushes to create a work of art.
“Paint what you love and what makes you happy,” Pyatt-Baker stated. “It can be a singular image, a quote or a miniature masterpiece.”
The mural will also be on display and open to the public throughout the month of February for anyone who can’t make it to Friday’s event. Blocks can be painted during business hours on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Pyatt-Baker said this was a good way to fill the gallery’s walls between exhibits.
“I’ve heard some people remark that it looks sad empty, so I thought this was a good fit,” she stated. “I got the idea from the ‘Flag of Hope’ that passed through recently.”
The Flag of Hope was the nation’s first flag made with handprints of community members throughout North Carolina.

“This is your (the community’s) arts council, your gallery, your exhibit,” said Pyatt-Baker.
