Linda Cloherty has been named executive director of the Historic Carson House, replacing Sara Bryant following her retirement at the end of 2011.
"We are delighted to welcome Ms. Cloherty to carry on the fine tradition of hospitality, historic preservation and visitor education to which Ms. Bryant contributed so much,” said Board Chairman James Haney. “Our board is confident that Ms. Cloherty’s experience in public relations and marketing, her historical interests and her knowledge of the community will be of great value as we move forward."
Most recently, Cloherty served as community relations director at The McDowell Hospital. Of her new position, Cloherty stated, "I'm looking forward to working with the most impressive Carson House board and volunteer partners to encourage visitors to honor our heritage and appreciate this evolving, beautifully preserved farm home that brings alive 18th/19th century cultural life in our area."
Drawing almost 2,000 visitors in 2011, the Historic Carson House is recognized as a rare example of beauty and structural integrity for the antebellum era, as well as its importance in the early development of political and economic life in McDowell County. Visitors experience a guided tour of the house and barn that represent life on an up-country plantation in the mid-1800s. A new permanent exhibit details the experience of enslaved African Americans and their contributions to Carson legacy and regional culture.
The house will open April 4 for the season, welcoming visitors Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5 p.m. For more information, visit the website at www.historiccarsonhouse.org.
