Randy Williams is seeking a fourth term on the McDowell County Board of Education.
Williams, 54, of 140 N. Garden St. in Marion filed Friday afternoon as a candidate for re-election to the school board. He holds one of the three Marion seats up for election this year.
“I would like to continue what we have begun,” he said Monday. “Our kids are our future. We need to give them every possible opportunity to get them educated for the future.”
Williams added that McDowell’s students will have to be prepared for living and working in a world economy. He said he would like to see the Early College continue and grow.
In addition, the school board members are actively searching for a new superintendent, now that Ira Trollinger is retiring.
“All board members are directly involved,” he said. “We need to have the input of the people. I think Dr. Trollinger was a fine example of an outstanding leader. He cared about the kids and he taught outside the box. We are really going to miss him.”
Williams said he would like to continue the work that has been started.
“I feel like I would be doing the children of McDowell County an injustice if I did not put myself on the ballot for re-election,” he said. “We have started programs like middle school. We have a phenomenal administration support staff. We have technically lost no teachers because of monies, only because of class size. I do care about kids. I do put them No. 1.”
Williams is a real estate broker and a sergeant with the N.C. Department of Correction. He and his family are members of Nebo First Baptist Church.
On Tuesday, Terry English filed to run for a fifth term on the school board. He holds the North Cove seat on the board.
English, 52, of 19618 U.S. 221 North is a dairy farmer in North Cove. He was not available for comment.
