Terry English believes he has more to offer as he seeks another term on the McDowell County Board of Education.
English, 52, of 19618 U.S. 221 North filed Tuesday afternoon as a candidate for re-election to the school board. He holds the North Cove seat, which is up for election this year.
“I just feel like I still have something to offer,” he said on Wednesday.
English is seeking a fifth term on the school board, where he served many years as the chairman.
As he runs for re-election, English said he wants to continue the work that has been started.
“There’s going to be an awful lot of changes taking place over the next couple of years,” he said.
These changes will include the hiring of a new school superintendent. School board members are searching for the new superintendent, since Ira Trollinger is retiring. The Common Core Curriculum will be introduced to staff in the school system. Funding for schools will also continue to be a challenge, said English.
In addition, the school system will work to make both East and West junior highs into middle schools. With the county purchasing the old Universal Bedroom Furniture plant, the school system will partner with McDowell Technical Community College to find new uses for vacant space.
“There’s a lot of challenges, but I usually find that challenges bring a lot of opportunity, too,” said English. “I’ve been around a while. I want to put that knowledge to good use for our county.”
English is a dairy farmer in North Cove. He is also an appointed supervisor with the McDowell County Soil and Conservation District.
On Wednesday, Mark Cauthen filed to run for re-election to the School Board. A resident of 281 Pinecrest Drive, Cauthen holds one of the three Marion seats on the board that is up for election this year. He is currently the board’s vice chairman.
Cauthen could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon. The filing period ends at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 29.
