Marion Mommies is looking for new members.

The group consists of local moms and young ones, who meet each month for playtime and activities.

Krystal Wohnus, mother of two, said the group has seen a decline in membership recently and would like to see it grow again.

“We all have a great time together and have grown really close,” she said. “But we’ve gotten out of the swing of things recently and would like to pick back up.”

Wohnus, along with group member, Netta Shedlock, helped organize  Marion Mommies back in 2007.

“I was part of a moms group in Asheville before I moved here, and they were wonderful,” she said. “This is a great opportunity to get together and make new friends for ourselves and our children.”

Mothers with infants, toddlers and preschool-age children are encouraged to participate. Get-togethers are held in kid-friendly environments that may include local (and out-of-town) venues, parks, activity centers and group members’ homes.

“We do all sorts of stuff. If we have home gatherings, we’ll do activities and crafts too. If there’s an upcoming holiday, we’ll do festive things for those.”

Elizabeth Watkins, who moved to Nebo from Raleigh last year, joined “Marion Mommies” in June.

“I really love participating,” she said. “It made the adjustment of moving here much easier,” she said.

Watkins found the group after running an online search for “local moms groups.”

She said the group has not only helped her get acclimated to the area, but also her three-year-old son, Jacob.

“He’s learning how to play better with children, and gets so excited whenever I mention play dates. The group has helped all the way around.”

Sometimes however, moms need a “play date” of their own.

“We have Mom’s Night Out, too,” said Wohnus.

Members take a poll at group gatherings to see where the next venture will be, and make plans from there. Most recently, the group went to Texas Pizza for dinner and conversation.

“This helps us relate to each other on more of a personal level if we are having struggles or need advice,” said Watkins.

Anyone interested in joining can go online to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/marionmommies/ and sign up. A calendar of events is posted on the webpage with upcoming activities. Members are also notified of events by e-mail. Krystal Wohnus can be contacted at (828) 713-0083.

“With spring and summer just around the corner, we’ll have lots of activities scheduled. We really have a lot of fun.”
