The McDowell Lady Titans opened the 2010 golf season on an encouraging note, finishing fifth overall - and second among conference teams - in a match at Forest City Country Club Tuesday.
All seven Mountain Athletic 4A/3A Conference teams competed, along with four squads from outside the conference. West Henderson (115) won the match, and was followed by T.C. Roberson (126), Hendersonville (128), Owen (133), McDowell (139), A.C. Reynolds (144), Polk (160), Enka (168), Asheville (174) and North Buncombe (174). Erwin had only two players and no team score.
"Our girls did a great job," said McDowell head coach Charles Webber. "They looked real strong. Maybe we can improve and catch up with T.C. Roberson."
Junior Madalyn Davis was McDowell's top finisher with a 40. Among league players, she finished behind only Roberson's Kristen Rhodin (37).
Lady Titans sophomore Morgan Hemphill carded a personal best round of 46. Junior Haley Goforth shot 53 to round out McDowell's individual scoring.
McDowell plays at High Vista today and at Asheville Municipal Monday.
