West McDowell Junior High’s Cody Waycaster was recently selected as a member of the North Carolina All-Star team playing in the Football University (FBU) 8th grade National Championship.

Waycaster, a member of the Spartans football team, attended the FBU combine last month at Avery County High School. The lineman was one of three players from western North Carolina who made a group at the Avery combine. Waycaster will be among a team of 40 representing the state at the 8th grade division.

“To me, this is a once in a lifetime experience,” said Waycaster. “Playing the game of football is really important to me. I’ve been playing since I was 4 years old. This is an opportunity for me to become a better football player in the future. I was very nervous at first when I went to the first practice but I have developed a friendship with my teammates and a sense of chemistry.”

The North Carolina team, which is based in Charlotte, began play in the 8th grade National Championship last weekend in Rock Hill, S.C., winning 21-0 against the Palmetto team and scoring a 12-10 victory against a group from Jacksonville Florida.

The team will continue its journey to the National Championship this weekend in Orlando, Fla. as North Carolina will battle Central Florida in third-round action.

Waycaster said he has received great support from the West McDowell coaching staff while being a part of the all-star team.

“A lot of people have been very supportive of me,” he said. “Coach (Matt) Davis found out about this all-star game and helped me get into the combine. The school has also been supportive, allowing me to use equipment while I am playing.”

The FBU National Championship is a 40-team tournament that was created from All-American Games (AAG), the owner and producer of the Army All-American Bowl, the nation’s biggest high school all-star football game.

The FBU will hold its National Championship game Jan. 7 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Tex.
