The West McDowell Spartans took county gridiron bragging rights for the 2011 season as West blanked the East McDowell Trojans 28-0 Monday afternoon in junior high play.

West McDowell (3-2) found itself playing on the Trojans’ side of the 50-yard line. The Spartans gained just 183 yards of offense but made the most of it. Gavyn Malone led the team in rushing with 55 yards and Jarrett Dula complimented that performance with 53 yards on the ground.

On the second possession of the game, West’s Tanner Allen (3 carries, 33 yards) put the Spartans ahead 8-0 on a 25-yard touchdown run followed by a successful conversion.

After a quiet second quarter, West scored three more times in an eight-minute stretch during the second half.

The Spartans extended their lead to 14-0 midway through the third when Chase Campbell caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Casey Ray.

Michael Wall scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter to stretch the Spartans lead to 22-0. And Austin Edwards capped off the performance with a 5-yard run with 4:08 left.

East McDowell (0-5) was held in check offensively, accumulating 40 total yards of offense. Running back Oakland Mitchell gained 29 yards on 11 carries.
