The McDowell Titans’ journey to North Wilkes High School followed a long and winding path. But the Titan jayvees’ philosophy on football was a more straightforward approach.
McDowell, with its physical style of play on both sides of the ball, closed the 2011 campaign with a lopsided 28-6 victory against the Vikings.
The Titans accumulated 356 yards of total offense in the contest and could move the ball at will on North Wilkes.
Sophomore running back Trey Anderson had 156 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries in the victory. Quarterback Dallas Myers also finished the season on a strong note, going 6-of-15 passing for 131 yards, two passing scores and one rushing touchdown.
Meanwhile, the Titans defense held the Vikings wing-T offense in check for nearly the entire 40 minutes.
North Wilkes did squeeze across one score on a long running play in the final two minutes.
But other than that McDowell displayed one of its better defensive performances of the season, forcing three turnovers.
The Titans jumped in front 6-0 at the halfway point of the first quarter on Myers’ 10-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Marshall (3 receptions, 93 yards, 2 TDs).
The tandem connected again, this time on a 41-yard pass play at the 6:47 mark in the second on which Marshall caught the pass along the sideline, broke a tackle and stayed inbounds to cross the goal line.
Then, in third quarter, Anderson capped off a long scoring drive by punching the ball in from 2 yards out to put the Titans in front 20-0.
Myers then capped off the evening with a 1-yard run at the 6:48 mark in the fourth.
McDowell finishes the 2011 season with a 7-3 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the Mountain Athletic Conference.
