The McDowell Titans placed fourth in the Mountain Athletic 4A/3A Conference wrestling tournament at Enka Saturday, finishing with one individual conference champion and a pair of runner-up performances.
McDowell scored 97.5 points, finishing behind tournament champion T.C. Roberson (224), Enka (186.5) and North Buncombe (118.5). Erwin (77.5), Asheville (38) and A.C. Reynolds (19) rounded out the field.
As expected, the Titans’ undefeated 222-pounder Tyler Radford captured the league championship in his weight class. Josh Dula (147) and Wesley Davis (162) both placed second in their respective divisions.
Radford, the top seed, had a first-round bye. He won his semifinal bout when Asheville’s David Turner was forced to take an injury default. In the championship bout, Radford won a 9-6 decision over T.C. Roberson’s Cody Miles.
Dula, a sophomore, was seeded second at 147. He received a first-round bye, and then won a 5-0 decision over Erwin’s Keaton MacLean in the semis. T.C. Roberson’s Matt Kamisol decisioned Dula 14-7 in the championship bout.
Davis, also a sophomore, was the second seed at 162 and received a bye in the first round. Davis pinned North Buncombe’s Tyler Shelton in the first period to advance to the finals. There, Davis lost a hard-fought 2-1 decision to T.C. Roberson’s Williams Ramos.
McDowell had a pair of third-place finishers, 122-pounder Jacob Gardner and 184-pounder Legend Pressley.
Noah Bailey (115), Pike Davis (128), Trey Anderson (154) and Tanner Lenon (172) all placed fourth.
Lenon, the ninth-ranked 172-pounder in 4A, wrestled in what was likely the event’s toughest division. Lenon fell in the semifinals to eventual tourney champion and Most Valuable Wrestler, fourth-ranked Tyler Jones of T.C. Roberson. Erwin’s Shafer LeMieux, who lost to Jones in the finals, is 10th in the 3A rankings.
McDowell is idle until the individual Regionals begin Feb. 17 in Charlotte.
